Gyms, recreation centres, and sports are all great ways to stay fit, however, they aren’t the only ones. If you’re not the type of person to go to these types of places for whatever reason, staying home doesn’t mean you need to abstain from physical activity. The NHS encourages everyone to get at least 150 minutes of exercise per week, so it is best to keep moving. Here are a number of ways to stay fit while at home.
Running or Cycling
Staying home doesn’t necessarily mean staying indoors all the time, and getting out to get fresh air can be a way to lift your spirits too. Cycling can take some specialized equipment, but with a pair of good running shoes and comfortable clothes, you can go on a run to increase your heart rate and get your blood pumping. Try to change up your scenery by visiting parks or finding wooded trails.
Yoga can be an inclusive, low-impact way to get your body moving. If it seems daunting, remember that it begins with a little light stretching to improve flexibility, and that there are even a range of movements that don’t require a yoga mat. A cursory internet search will yield thousands of free video tutorials, so you have plenty of options to choose from. Many websites offer series ranging from beginner to advanced skill levels, as well as routines tailored to fit certain body types and abilities. Namaste (at home)!
Stairs and Sofa
Workout equipment need not be fancy: get creative! If your house has stairs, use them! You can do something as simple as walking up and down them a few times, but for those looking for more of a challenge, you can try stair pushups, reverse lunges, and tricep dips. The sofa can be an unsung piece of workout equipment as well. Sitting down and standing up again ten times in a row will work out your legs. Search “sofa workout” for ideas to get you fit from the comfort of your own living room.
If you have a garden, the warm weather presents a great opportunity for you to get out in it. Some hobbies, like gardening, keep you fit and active from the physical activity it requires, and you’ll get a workout in without even realizing it.
